Surprisingly sweet and gentle story, July 1, 2016

I never for the life of me thought I would have an interest in condors– in fact I never thought I’d even read a book where condors play a strong role! And here I am, deeply in love with the sweet characters that author Gigi Sedlmayer created. I was given a free copy for an honest review, and I read it the first time through on my own. I plan to read it again with my children, and then move onto the next in this series. I liked that main character, Matica, was not a typical lead female character, where everything about her is perfect as seen by others; instead, she was perfectly herself, facing challenges and delights head-on with spunk, strength, and ingenuity. Her family was warm, caring, and supportive, even if they were intimidated at first by the birds. Sedlmayer created a wonderful, positive, and hopeful world, where friendships are created, dreams can come true, and people can learn and forgive. I enjoyed the language flow, the interactions, and the story line itself. My only issue was sometimes I’d forget who was who when reading a name– did that belong to the brother or the condor?– but I’d figure it out quickly enough. It might have been that I was sneaking my reading time at night after tucking the kids into bed, and my brain was a little foggy! I recommend this book!
